Sarah Herrington writes, teaches, and practices presence.


Sarah is a writer, poet, editor, writing instructor and longtime yoga and meditation teacher. Her work explores the intersections of creativity, embodiment, and care.

Her essays have appeared in The New York Times (Modern Love, Opinion, Anxiety, Solver Stories), the Los Angeles Times, Poets & Writers, Salon, Interview Magazine, Slice, and the Los Angeles Review of Books, among other outlets. She’s the author of four books on yoga (Penguin, Rodale/Random House) and is a regular contributor to Yoga Journal. She is at work on a memoir.

Sarah holds MFAs from New York University, where she was a Goldwater Fellow in Creative Nonfiction, and Lesley University. Her nonfiction has been supported by the Community of Writers, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and NYU’s Graduate Research Initiative.

She currently teaches writing at Fordham University and leads private workshops and mentorships for writers.

Passionate about self and community care, she’s also an advocate for safer spaces in spiritual communities. Her work on yoga and ethics has been featured on NPR, CNN, The New York Times and she presented at Harvard University’s “Uses and Abuses of Power in Alternative Spiritualities” conference on Narrative Healing from Spiritual Abuse.

She lives (and walks her dog) in Brooklyn.

Before shifting more fully into writing and teaching writers, Sarah worked full-time in public education, teaching yoga and literacy in NYC schools. She later served as Program Administrator for the first Master of Arts in Yoga Studies in North America at Loyola Marymount University where she taught in the Yoga, Mindfulness and Social Change program.

Sarah was selected as one of eight women poets to watch by Oprah magazine, read on stages from the Bowery Poetry Club to St Marks Poetry Project, and served as a writing mentor to girls in NYC.
